Background: A private client asked us to undertake the packing of the main mast, mizzen mast and boom from a 1936 classic yacht. The ship is worth many millions, so naturally a great deal of care was required at every stage of the process. We actually arrived to find that we needed to pack 5 items rather than 3, as there was a mizzen boom and a bowsprit that we had not been informed about, which also needed packing.
Solution: Firstly, we needed to adapt our cradle design and strapping to accommodate the extra units and weight. Unfortunately, we had no extra time to work with: having got the go-ahead on the Tuesday, we needed to fly on the Friday and pack over the weekend ready for shipping at 07:30 on the Tuesday morning! We managed to ship our equipment and materials to site, meet the deadline, pack all 5 items and have them ready for loading, as needed, all within the tight timescales required. Throughout the project, we worked alongside the ship’s captain who had flown in from the USA to oversee the project.
