Background: Our customer needed to ship machinery for the construction of seat tracks for the automotive industry to Detroit. The main challenge was the fact that the heaviest piece was 20 tons and had not been designed to be shipped in one piece. Unfortunately, with a belt now running through it, it had become impossible to dismantle; and, because of its weight and lack of rigidity, it could not be picked up at its centre without irreparable damage.
Solution: We constructed a special rigid base of steel and timber to support the whole piece of machinery. This allowed us to manoeuvre it by crane without damage, although it did weigh 44 tons all-up!
